To celebrate Earth Day, we interviewed Lora Tange, Sentek Global Staff Accountant and Green Team founder.
Two of Sentek Global’s guiding principles are See something wrong, fix it; and Make a difference. Our team is proud of Lora Tange and the entire Green Team for living those values through their dedication to sustainability.
Why did you start the Green Team?
Sustainability is important to me so I was looking forward to joining something similar to the Green Team when I was first hired at Sentek Global. Once I found out that we didn’t yet have a Green Team, our People & Culture team encouraged me to take the initiative and start one. Thankfully we have a group of individuals at the company who are also passionate about the cause, which enabled us to start our Green Team. And we’re growing!
Why is sustainability important to you?
I’m passionate about taking care of the environment and about preserving our natural resources. Because of this, I have already incorporated sustainable practices into my personal life and at home; now it’s my goal to incorporate sustainability into my life at work as well. It’s really inspiring to do this with my coworkers and see the interest in sustainability making its way across our team. The passion is contagious!
What does the Green Team have planned for 2019?
2019 is our first full year of operation so we’ve got several exciting and impactful things planned: We adopted the beach on Shelter Island here in San Diego so we will have a couple beach cleanups during the year. We are also working on ways to reduce the waste stream at Sentek Global’s San Diego Headquarters by increasing recycling and reducing the use of disposable goods.
Do you have any tips or recommend any resources for other organizations that may want to start a Green Team of their own?
My first piece of advice for successfully starting a Green Team is for company leaders to listen to their employees: working for a company that adopts sustainable practices is important to many people. If you have employees who are passionate about sustainability, encourage them to start a Green Team. The more employees on the team, the higher the rate of successfully implementing sustainable practices, company-wide.
Additionally, Terracycle is a wonderful company dedicated to increasing recycling of many waste streams not currently collected by city governments. They partner with companies that will purchase and repurpose the collected waste streams preventing them from ending up in landfills.
What are some of the initiatives the Green Team has focused on so far?
So far we have focused on increasing recycling efforts at Headquarters in San Diego. This started with an audit in February to identify more recycling opportunities that we will continue to pursue.
Thank you to Lora and the Green Team for their dedication to making Sentek Global a more sustainable and green company.
