December 17, 2018, SAN DIEGO, CA: Sentek Global, a leading provider of IT and cybersecurity services to the Department of Defense, and NDIA San Diego Chapter announced that the Haiku Cyber Range is the official cyber range of the 10th annual SoCal Cyber Cup Challenge.
Over 400 middle school and high school students throughout Southern California will be competing in teams to utilize Haiku’s revolutionary, gamified, Cloud-based technology for an opportunity to defend simulated systems that are under a cyber-attack in a challenge to win the title of top team in Southern California.
“Nearly every industry is vulnerable to cybercrime which has created a dire need for skilled cyber professionals; this need will only increase as we move into the future,” shared Eric Basu, President & CEO of Sentek Global, the company behind the creation of the Haiku Cyber Range. “We’re proud to support the SoCal Cyber Cup Challenge as these students are the cyber heroes of tomorrow.”
The Haiku Cyber Range is provided to the students with support from Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) cloud-based services. AWS’ Cloud-based technology enables teams from all over Southern California to access the cyber range and compete in the practice, qualification, and final rounds from any location.
A team of National University students earning their Master’s degree in cybersecurity collaborated with Sentek Global to create exciting mock scenarios that the students can challenge themselves on while in the Haiku Cyber Range. The graduate students, some of whom compete on the University’s cyber competition team, built the scenarios for the qualifying round as their final capstone project to test the young competitors’ skills in cyber defense.
“National University is thrilled to collaborate with Sentek Global, NDIA San Diego, and the California Cyberhub in support of the SoCal Cyber Cup,” said Chris Simpson, Director of National University’s Center for Cybersecurity, which is recognized by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education. “Through this competition we have an opportunity to give back to the communities we serve and inspire future cybersecurity professionals to help keep the nation’s networks safe.”
Liz Fraumann, executive advisor of the California Cyberhub shared, “The Haiku Cyber Range offers the students a safe place to experience a real, working, network. The opportunity is profound; one that many professionals would love to experience. The investment companies are making in our future by supporting the effort is tremendous and one we are pleased to share in.”
Many of the teams have already had the opportunity to practice their cyber skills on the Haiku Cyber Range during the practice rounds, however, teams who would like to join the competition still have time as the SoCal Cyber Cup Challenge is accepting teams of 5-8 students until January 2nd.
“It is because the generous sponsors that support the Cyber Cup Challenge, many who are NDIA members, is how we are able to expand and reach more students in more locations over the past ten years. We thank you!” said Lillian Maestas, STEM Chair, NDIA San Diego Chapter.
